Watch Now: 11 HARROWHOUSE

The fact that the British 1974 comedy thriller 11 Harrowhouse remains unknown to a good deal of the movie-loving community is at the same time a real shame and a blessing. A shame because this lighthearted caper heist film deserves much more recognition than it did in the past. A blessing because there’s quite a lot of people who haven’t stumbled upon it yet and will likely enjoy its comical tone, intriguing and immediately gripping premise and a gallery of great talent from the likes of Charles Grodin, James Mason, Candice Bergen and Trevor Howard.

Based on the novel of the same name from Gerald A. Browne and adapted for the screen by Grodin himself, with Jeffrey Bloom’s screenplay, Michael J. Lewis’ great music and Arthur Ibbetson behind the lens, 11 Harrowhouse introduces us to a small-time diamond merchant forced to pull off a huge diamond heist in London. His wealthy girlfriend is here to help him, and the addition of an inside man from the vault surprisingly means the inexperienced crew’s ludicrous plan might actually work. Enriched with Grodin’s sardonic narration, 11 Harrowhouse is a thoroughly entertaining heist thriller with quite a few laughs in its vault.
