Le Choix des armes, or as it was called in foreign markets, Choice of Arms is filmmaker Alain Corneau’s 1981 French crime film with Philippe Sarde’s score, starring the acclaimed tercet of Yves Montand, Gerard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve in the main roles. A retired gangster lives a peaceful life with his beautiful wife breeding horses on a tranquil estate outside Paris. His idyllic ways are completely destroyed when his mortally wounded old acquaintance seeks shelter at his farm alongside his hot-headed, unstable accomplice. It doesn’t take long for the police to also become involved, and the retired criminal is forced to recede to his old ways in an effort to salvage the life he’s built.
Choice of Arms is a peculiar crime film because it gives a lot of attention to the development of its characters during the course of the movie. The welcome elements of character study are further enhanced by social commentary, as the distinction between city low-life in the form of the uninvited guest and the distinguished tranquility of the privileged country life creates sparks that helped move the narrative forward. Expertly shot and perfectly acted, it’s an appetizing crime specialty we’ve learned to expect from Corneau.
