Released on the first day of October 1975 in France under the title Flic Story, this is a French crime thriller directed by Jacques Deray and based on police detective Roger Borniche’s autobiography of the same name. Starring Alain Delon, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Renato Salvatori and Claudine Auger, Flic Story is a riveting depiction of detective Borniche’s nine-year pursuit of the notorious gangster and killer Emile Buisson, who was responsible for over thirty murders and a hundred robberies, executed by guillotine in 1956. Alain Delon plays the detective, while Trintignant jumped into the shoes of the infamous gangster.

The detective and killer’s game of cat and mouse is portrayed as, first and foremost, a battle of their intellects, and just as Deray liked to employ the technique in his other films, the villain here is humanized and therefore brought closer to the audience. This wise technique brought the immediate consequence of making the story much more complex, inviting the viewers to connect to the plot and characters on a deeper level. It’s this specific quality – along with great acting and a tidy script that put in the effort of shedding light on the supporting characters as well – that helped earn Flic Story praise and approval of the critics, still standing strong as one of Deray’s best movies.
