Motivated by his desire to provide a future for his wife and child with a blood disorder, a young man called Eddie moves to Texas, where his short fuse soon takes him behind bars. Having attempted an unsuccessful escape from prison, Eddie receives a tough prison sentence that motivates him and his wife to come up with a new and improved plan to break his chains. Eddie’s goal is to run across Texas in an effort to reach the US-Mexico border, but his task is made much more difficult by Carl Marzack, an inmate transfers detective who caught him the first time he ran away. As his wife and kid wait for him south of the border, Eddie will do whatever he can to elude his persistent chaser.
Based on the 1980 novel by James McLendon, Eddie Macon’s Run was written, directed and edited by Revenge of the Nerds’ Jeff Kanew. This combination of action, thriller and drama is centered around the interaction between the detective and the harshly punished man with a good heart, which means the picture is carried on the shoulders of its two leads – Kirk Douglas and John Schneider. An ordinary guy with the odds stacked against him – it’s a simple but highly effective premise, more than enough to propel the plot of this entertaining flick that managed to age like a champ.
