Watch Now: FEAR CITY
A former professional boxer has a successful career as a nightclub promoter and manager of Manhattan’s best exotic dancers, but his personal life is severely damaged as he’s haunted by the memory of accidentally killing his opponent in the ring. This is the reason his relationship with his top dancer ended in the gutter. But when a serial killer starts assaulting and killing exotic dancers around the neighborhood one by one, the man has to do whatever he can to protect not only the business, but also the people he loves. An antagonistic detective assigned to the case doesn’t shy away from openly showing how much he despises their profession, but works hard to catch the killer. As the list of victims grows night after night, their time is obviously running out.
Premiering in New York City and Los Angeles at the beginning of 1985, Abel Ferrara’s Fear City is a neo-noir erotic thriller that shows all the talents that made the filmmaker such a respected and polarizing figure on the filmmaking scene. Film critic Janet Maslin commended Ferrara on his “skill with action scenes and nonverbal narration”, highlighting his “visual talent for the unexpected”. With Tom Berenger, Billy Dee Williams, Melanie Griffith and Jack Scalia in front of the camera, it’s not all that surprising Fear City has gained such a cult status among film lovers.
