In 1976 George La Fountaine saw his debut novel Two-Minute Warning made into a feature film and released his second book Flashpoint that very same year. Eight years later his second novel was also turned into a movie and was directed by William Tannen, marking his feature film debut. The neo-western thriller came out to mixed reviews, even though several critics praised the director's capability to grab the viewers' interest and focus it where he sees fit, a skill they attributed to the years Tannen spent helming commercials.
The story of Flashpoint follows two border patrol officers, played by Kris Kristofferson and Treat Williams, as they stumble upon a buried jeep in the desert. They find out the vehicle had been hidden under the sand for twenty years or so, along with its cargo—a dead body, a rifle, and 800 000 dollars. One of them wants to keep the money, the other one wants to find out how it got there in the first place. Soon the FBI comes investigating, and the mystery of the jeep driver's reason for ending up in the desert gets a pretty shocking reveal. Kristofferson and Williams have good chemistry together, one of them being a more seasoned officer, the other one a young hotshot, playing off of each other with great expertise. The rest of the cast is not lacking in star power, with Rip Torn, Kurtwood Smith and Jean Smart in supporting roles.
