First and foremost, what stands out upon reading about this film is that Framed is director Phil Karlson’s, master of vengeance, last film. Karlson is the perfect example of a hard worker who started by scrubbing toilets at Universal Pictures and ended with having his film archived by the National Film Registry. 1975 crime neo-noir Framed is a revenge film based on a novel by Art Powers and Mike Misenheimer written by Mort Briskin, starring Joe Don Baker, Karlson’s star from hugely successful Walking Tall, and Conny Van Dyke.

Nightclub owner and gambler Ron Lewis innocently stumbles across a shooting that results in the death of the sheriff. After that all hell breaks loose: he is framed by the cartel and gets put behind bars, but the real story unfolds when, after his four-year undeserved time spent in prison, Ron goes on a strategically crafted revenge rampage and finds out what really happened. Some of the scenes of this action-packed and very violent thriller were filmed in an actual prison in Tennessee, including performances of some real inmates and correctional officers. Interestingly enough, not long after its release, the infamous bologna riot at that prison took place leaving one prisoner dead and 26 injured. Framed is as real as it gets.
