Often referred to as the best heist movie that not many people saw, Grand Slam has definitely earned its small cult following. Inspired by another heist movie called Rififi, the plot of Grand Slam revolves around a group of criminals brought together by retired professor James Anders, who is now living in Brazil. His idea is to rob a bank containing diamonds worth ten million dollars during the Rio Carnival. The only problem for the group lies in the bank's security system—the brand-new Grand Slam 70, designed to protect the vault from plans like theirs.
Janet Leigh plays the role of a woman seduced by one of the robbers with the intention of getting the key to the building. And it was a role she allegedly had a lot of fun with, seeing as how a substantial part of the movie was shot without any permissions from local offices, so Leigh and the crew had to film incognito, hoping to get every scene in one take. Apart from Leigh, the movie had other international stars to bank on, like Klaus Kinski, Adolfo Celi, Edward G. Robinson and Robert Hoffman. Grand Slam was directed by Italian filmmaker Giuliano Montaldo and released in Italy under the alternative title Ad ogni costo.
