Watch Now: HOOPER
Sonny Hooper is an experienced stunt coordinator on an action film who, worried after a doctor’s somber warning and wanting to fulfill his girlfriend’s wishes, decides to leave the business. However, the arrival of a younger, even more careless stuntman, along with the director’s desire to shoot a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening ending, pushes Sonny into changing his plans. He will finish the film and, if the consequences allow it, walk away from the set forever.
Directed by a former stuntman Hal Needham and starring Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Robert Klein, Jan-Michael Vincent, Brian Keith and Adam West (playing himself!), Hooper is an action-comedy created to put the much-needed spotlight on the profession of stuntmen and stuntwomen. A huge box office hit, it took several years to finally get made. Conceived in 1975 and shelved the following year, it was shot in 1977 when the legendary Lawrence Gordon came on board as an executive producer. With “one of the most effortlessly appealing movie stars around”, as Janet Maslin called Reynolds, Hooper was a financial and critical success. Moreover, it earned its place in film history books thanks to the fact that it was one of the first films to make use of the blooper reel credit roll.
