Les seinsde glace or Icy Breasts (even “breasts of ice” would work fine), sometimes called Someone Is Bleeding after Richard Matheson’s novel it was based on, is a French-Italian psychological thriller written and directed by Georges Lautner (Le Professionnel, Road to Salina). With Alain Delon, Mireille Darc and Claude Brasseur in the lead roles, it tells the story of a television writer who meets and falls in love with a mysterious blonde widow called Peggy. Infatuated with her beauty, he fails to immediately see that something’s off, but as he soon talks to her lawyer, he learns she murdered her husband and got acquitted on the count of temporary insanity. Nobody, however, seems strong enough to pull themselves out of the orbit of this homicidal lady.

Le seins de glace was a big box office success in France, with almost 1.5 million tickets sold during its theater rounds. Fuelled by Philippe Sarde’s melancholic score and convincing delivery from the cast, Lautner’s film remains an intriguing thriller during its 105-minute running time. Even though the audience rather quickly realizes what kind of a woman is at the center of the film’s attention, it’s still a mystery how all the other characters and their hidden motives fit into the story. Icy Breasts was co-produced by Delon and it comes as no surprise that the lead female part went to Darc, his wife at the time.
