Watch Now: LAST SUMMER
Based on the 1968 novel by Evan Hunter, Last Summer is a coming-of-age film that intertwines newly-discovered sexuality and human cruelty, which were the reason that the film originally received an X rating, leaving the viewers to think of their adolescent years and the choices they made. The main trio of characters - Dan, Peter and Sandy - were portrayed by Bruce Davison, Richard Thomas and Barbara Hershey and the fourth character, Rhoda, was played by Catherine Burns, a role that got her nominated for an Academy Award.
This 1969 story is quite a simple one: two adolescent boys Dan and Peter, while vacationing on Fire Island - famous for its up-and-coming apartments, befriend Sandy and start hanging out together while trying alcohol and drugs. Suddenly, another young girl named Rhoda appears, who they start picking on because she isn’t part of their clique and their actions cause the film to take a much darker turn than expected. This peculiar plot delivers a tale of a young person’s desire to be accepted into the culturally constructed social circles, but also gives insight into the positions of power that have an enormous effect on human lives.
