Watch Now: ON DANGEROUS GROUND
From the director of They Live by Night, Rebel Without a Cause and The Savage Innocents, Nicholas Ray, On Dangerous Ground is a hauntingly beautiful film noir featuring Robert Ryan, Ida Lupino and Ward Bond under the spotlight. Ryan brings to life a cynical police officer prone to violence who uses physical beating as a means of getting information from his suspects. Hoping he would find some balance and moderation in his way of life, his superiors send him to a remote part of the country to assist in a murder investigation. There he meets a selfless blind woman (Lupino) whose mentally ill brother turns out to be the killer in question. Spending time with the woman, the protagonist really becomes a reformed man and figures out there’s a whole other side of life he never allowed himself to experience.
With George E. Diskant gorgeous cinematography and Bernard Herrmann’s soulful score, On Dangerous Ground is a frequently overlooked gem of the noir genre well worth your time. Based on Gerald Butler’s novel Mad with Much Heart, this film is a captivating story of a troubled man’s transformation from bitterness to hope, and nowhere could this tale be told more wonderfully than in the hands of Nicholas Ray.
