In this country music character study, we meet Maury Dann, played to a tee by Rip Torn. Maury is a charismatic but manipulative country singer focused on the good things in life. He is on the verge of making it big, but even on the level he is right now, the spoils of fame are aplenty. He spends his days performing, drinking and enjoying the company of women. But violence and destruction always seem to lurk just around the corner. The character of Maury was allegedly based on the legendary Hank Williams.
Many have praised Rip Torn's performance in Payday as being his best ever, a role that he gave a hundred percent in, even demanding to do his own singing in the movie. A real tour de force for Torn who was never particularly known for being a leading man. Director Daryl Duke’s feature debut impressed critics with its realistic display of the behind-the-scenes lives of country stars, but the public never really jumped on the bandwagon, resulting in Payday flopping at the box office. Luckily, the quality of the performance and the directing pleased enough people so that this movie was not allowed to be forgotten, and is slowly getting the recognition it truly deserves.
