With the great Yves Montand, François Périer, Simone Signoret and Stefania Sandrelli in the most important roles, Police Python 357 – also known under the name of The Case Against Ferro – is a 1976 French crime thriller written and directed by one of the genre's dignitaries, filmmaker Alain Corneau. This thriller is a stylish adaptation of Kenneth Fearing's 1946 novel called The Big Clock and introduces us to Inspector Marc Ferrot, a detective who is having an affair with a woman. When his boss kills this woman and puts Ferrot on the case, the detective is slowly figuring out all the clues and realizes they all point to the identity of the killer. Him.
Police Python 357 is the type of film that will keep you on the edge of your seat through the entire experience. With great cinematography by Étienne Becker and the score by the Academy Award-winner Georges Delerue, this is a delightful noir with exceptional performances from both Montand and Périer. It's these two people's relationships with the same woman that propel the movie forward, as Montand's character is forced to figure out the killer's identity completely unaware his mistress shared her bed with anyone other than him.
