Watch Now: RAW DEAL
A prison convict called Joe Sullivan ends up behind bars after taking the fall for a mobster who owes him his freedom, but also 50 thousand dollars from the job they pulled together. The same mobster helps Joe design an escape plan with the assistance of Joe’s girlfriend, counting on Joe getting killed or caught in the process. But much to the mobster’s consternation, Joe manages to break out and survive with the help of his girlfriend and his legal caseworker who had developed a crush on him. Hunted by Rick’s men and torn between the affections for two women who love him, he has several tough choices to make and not a lot of time to do so.
Raw Deal was directed by Anthony Mann, the same filmmaker who made several great westerns with Jimmy Stewart, and shot by his Hungary-born frequent collaborator John Alton, who’d later go on to win the Academy Award for his work on An American in Paris. Starring Dennis O’Keefe, Claire Trevor, Marsha Hunt and Raymond Burr of later Perry Mason fame, Raw Deal is an exciting and sharp black-and-white thriller that shouldn’t pass under anyone’s radar. A solid box office hit back in the day, it’s valued as one of the most prominent examples of quality American noir.
