Watch Now: ROAD GAMES
Stylized as Road Games, the Richard Franklin-directed Australian 1981 thriller film Roadgames is a suspenseful road movie about a truck driver and a hitchhiker tracking down a ruthless serial killer who dumps the bodies of the women he killed along dusty highways. Written by American-Australian screenwriter Everett De Roche and Starring Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis, the film is a well-written nail-biter that makes the absolute best out of its limited budget. Set against the vast Australian outback, the story is kept alive by great performances from Keach and Curtis, whose chemistry and dynamics occupy the center stage.
There’s an interesting anecdote from the film’s production: director Franklin gave his screenwriter De Roche a copy of Rear Window’s screenplay to show him what kind of a script he was after. De Roche decided to write a picture with a similar plot, but instead of an apartment, he wanted it to be played out on a moving vehicle. Also, Franklin’s first choice to play the lead was Sean Connery, but budgetary factors led him to Stacy Keach. Much more complicated was the situation with the lead actress – Australian actress Lisa Peers was cast, but the US distributors demanded that the co-star was of American nationality.
