Watch Now: ROGUE MALE
British novelist Geoffrey Household’s 1939 thriller novel Rogue Male got two cinematic adaptations over the course of the 20th century. The first was Fritz Lang’s 1941 movie called Man Hunt, starring Walter Pidgeon. The second was a BBC made television film that retained the book’s title, directed by British filmmaker Clive Donner, with a script written by Academy-Award-winning screenwriter Frederic Raphael. Rogue Male follows Sir Robert Hunter (Peter O’Toole) who aims his rifle at Adolf Hitler amidst a hunting trip but is caught by an SS guard. Although not unscathed, Hunter successfully escapes the Nazis and manages to get back to Britain. But after learning that German agents are after him, our protagonist is forced to change his plans.
Peter O’Toole claimed in 2007 that, out of all the films he had starred it, Rogue Male was his favorite. The actor delivers a truly masterful performance, effortlessly conveying all of the emotional turmoil his character Hunter experiences during the pre-war period, while going from hunter to hunted and then back to hunter again. Even the film’s title emphasizes the themes of survival and adaptation, seeing as how the term pertains to two things, one of them being a bull elephant who is no longer a part of its herd and has only itself to count on.
