Watch Now: SAVE THE TIGER
Released in 1973, Save the Tiger is an adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Steve Shagan, who has also written the script for the film. It was recognized by the Writers Guild of America and won the award for Best Drama Written Directly for the Screen. Furthermore, the director is John G. Avildsen, now best known for directing Rocky (1976), which earned him the Academy Award for Best Director. Avildsen also directed the first three The Karate Kid films, as well as Rocky V and many others.
This American drama film was awarded with the famous laurels, too: Jack Lemmon won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Harry Stoner, a war veteran trying to let go of his past while trying to keep his, and his business partner’s Phil Greene’s (Jack Gilford) fashion company afloat. The viewers are presented with two days in their lives, as the personal life and the past of the main character intertwine with his professional struggles of running a business. Lemmon was so interested in making this film that, because of its limited commercial prospects, he decided to waive his salary and worked for scale, a move that has certainly paid off since the critics very strongly praised his performance and he even walked away with an Oscar for his effort.
