Buy Now: SOL MADRID
The same year director Brian G. Hutton made Where Eagles Dare, he also helmed Sol Madrid, a cocktail of drugs and violence, with an intravenous method of delivery. Based on the book Fruit of the Poppy, written by screenwriter Robert Wilder and filmed entirely in beautiful Acapulco, the film follows titular agent Sol, as he goes to Mexico undercover to try and destroy a drug ring led by the charismatic Dietrich. He poses as a drug dealer looking for a supplier, while being helped by another undercover agent named Jalisco.
The movie has a fantastic cast, with David McCallum leading, and Telly Savalas giving him the much-needed counterbalance in the form of Dietrich. And it works to the film’s benefit, with McCallum portraying a character who does not stand out until the circumstances require it, as opposed to Savalas who delivers another role in which he steals every shot he is in, letting his natural charm shine through. Add Rip Torn to the mix, an actor who came in late to the project as a replacement for John Cassavetes, as he breathes life into the character of Dano Villanova, an embodiment of the world’s brutality. Now that is a recipe for an action crime story delight.
