Watch Now: STUNTS

After existing solely as a distribution company for ten years straight, New Line Cinema eventually got the necessary funding to produce its first full-length feature film in 1977. Capitalizing on the success of box office hits such as Cannonball (1976), Death Race 2000 (1975) and Smokey and the Bandit (1977), all of which involved a lot of stuntwork, New Line Cinema decided to produce Stunts, a 1977 whodunit film about stuntmen. Directed by American filmmaker Mark L. Lester who had previously made low-budget road movies such as Truck Stop Women (1974) and Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw (1976), but would go on to direct cult classics like Class of 1984 (1982), Firestarter (1984) and Commando (1985), Stunts follows Glen, a man who joins the stunt team of a film production after his brother Greg dies under mysterious circumstances while doing a stunt. As his co-workers start ending up like his late brother, Glen realizes he needs to find out who is behind it before he is next.

Starring the Academy-Award nominated actor Robert Forster (Best Supporting Actor in Tarantino’s Jackie Brown), as well as Joanna Cassidy (Zhora Salome in Blade Runner), Richard Lynch (The Sword and the Sorcerer) and Bruce Glover (Mr. Wint in Diamonds Are Forever), Lester’s murder mystery is a highly entertaining piece of cinema filled with interesting characters and impressive action sequences that offers us a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of B-movie filmmaking.
