Watch Now: THE SPLIT
Considering the success their previous feature called Point Blank had gained, producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff did not hesitate for a second when it came to using the Parker series of novels by author Richard Stark (pen name of writer Donald E. Westlake) yet again. They decided to adapt the novel The Seventh for their new movie and they offered Steve McQueen the lead role, but he turned them down so he could make Bullitt. Instead, Jim Brown read the script by Robert Sabaroff and became enthusiastic about it.
The story of Gordon Flemying’s The Split follows McClain (Brown), a criminal who has a plan to rob the Los Angeles Coliseum during a football game, for which he needs a team of professionals. He first tests them in their respective areas of expertise and then turns them into a team. But it is after they acquire the money that McClain gets in trouble—the dough gets stolen before they are able to split it amongst themselves equally and the whole team suspects McClain of trying to scam them. One of the many attributes that make this movie stand out is its phenomenal cast—Jim Brown, Gene Hackman, Donald Sutherland, Ernest Borgnine, Julie Harris, Diahann Carroll, Warren Oates—all of them bringing their A-game.
