Even though director Gary Sherman is perhaps most famous for his work in the horror genre (Dead & Buried, Death Line), in 1982 he directed a quite interesting action crime thriller called Vice Squad. With Gary Swanson, Season Hubley and Wings Hauser in the lead roles, the film tells the story of a single mother, ex-businesswoman turned prostitute Princess who is forced by the cops to work undercover with the goal of apprehending a murderous scumbag of a pimp called Ramrod. This misogynistic criminal will do his best not to end up behind bars, and Princess’ life is soon threatened as the detectives try to protect her from Ramrod’s retribution.

Shot by cinematographer John Alcott (2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining), Vice Squad is a cat-and-mouse thrill ride based on a simple yet incredibly effective premise. Wings Hauser plays the antagonist so well it gets incredibly easy to find yourself involved in the plot. Season Hubley later called her part in Vice Squad was “the most emotionally harrowing experience of her career”, partly because she was going through a tough custody battle while shooting the film. Gary Swanson, who’s likeable as the good guy trying to help Princess, praised the film for “not pulling any punches in bringing it all to life to the finest detail.”
